Being a Golden Retriever Owner I can tell that it's not as easy as it seems to raise a Goldie. Even though they are one of the most intelligent and gentle dogs, there are quite a few challenges that every new parent goes through. So I decided to share all the advice and tips for raising a Golden Retriever.

They are also stubborn at times. So, sometimes training or obedience goes well and sometimes not. But mostly well if you're patient.

They are very curious and have powerful sniffers. They also like to experience whatever with their tongues. While they typically get along with cats, cats tend to resent the power of a Golden's sniffer on the cat's hind end. Breathing in or out, the cat will know it's been sniffed by the Golden as they don't really have a discreet setting or the ability to adjust the power of their noses.

And, Golden's can easily overwhelm even their best cat friend by kissing (slobbering) in the cat's ears or on his face. Even a quick and gentle lick results in the Golden washing the cat more in one second than the cat could do to itself all day. Watching the cat's reaction is hysterical though.

My Golden's know the word "Gentle" with the cats means to not move a muscle while the cat weaves in and out of the dog's legs or when the cat slowly saunters by. Retrievers like to run and pounce on one another. Imagine how that looks to a cat whose about 10 pounds and about six inches off the ground when a Golden who is four times as tall and 7 times as heavy comes bounding down the hall toward or behind the cat.

Cats will usually keep their claws in when pawing at the dog's face for fun or to try to teach the Golden to be gentle. If it doesn't work, the claws come out and the Golden can get a painful reality--physically and emotionally. "Why did my friend hurt me?"

However, cats beware. A gentle Golden who thinks the cat is playing tag, might gently use a paw to tap the cat. It can be the most gentle of taps ever and still knock the cat clear off the chair, table, or whatever. And then sensing that he may have hurt his feline friend, the cat will experience Golden kisses, which tend to be as wet as a teen boy's first attempt at kissing. Tongue dehydration is not something Golden's ever experience.

And going back to noses, if the Golden catches a scent, he won't distract easily until his sniffer and brain have satisfied their curiosity and cataloged the smell. There isn't a hole in the ground or vegetation that a Golden won't stick his nose into. They have no fear of what might be in there, so be careful!

#11 Goldens actually are poor pets. If you want a pet, look elsewhere. If you want a true friend, a buddy that will be adopted into your family? Perfect. Just understand you are adopting a family member, not getting a pet. I am serious, I think it goes much easier if you go into it abandoning the concept of a 'pet', and simply accepting that your Golden will be a friend and member of your family. This characteristic is actually the culmination of other traits mentioned... How affection they are, how much they like to be included, how much they will love you, etc. They will see you as family, easier if you see them the same way.

Now, if you befriend a Golden, love them and consider them family, you are in for one of the coolest experiences you can have with a dog. There are no better buddies than a Golden Retriever. If 'buddy' was a job, Goldens would be serious professionals.

So drive the word 'pet' from your mind. That label doesn't fit here. If you want a pet, get a goldfish. If you want a buddy for life that will be true family, yeah, consider a Golden Retriever.
