Just before lockdown, my son became REALLY ill, with complex pain syndrome. We tried a million different diets... cf/gf, vegan, carnivore... 😢. I started to make EVERYTHING from scratch. No weird things. No additives, preservatives, colourants, seed oils.. From being 'too busy' ( i was teaching, and catering for kids parties ) i became retired, and loving every minute of this new 'frugal ' life❤

I was cooking roast dinners aged 11. Then rebelled in my 20s by not cooking anything, then got with the program in my 30s, and after buying 16 cookbooks was cooking all sorts of things. Now, in my early 50s, I've cut out most carbohydrates to heal an autoimmune disease. Well done for coming under budget, you have the knack, like me, of miraculously staying just under what you wanted to pay - a life skill indeed!!! What's good about using up all the stored cupboard and freezer ingredients is only buying what you really like when you restock. Love Lidl's spices, so cheap compared to everywhere else.🤩

I like to think I’m a good cook! I’m of the generation that did home economics at school. When first married we were so hard up, I learned how to make meals out of next to nothing. Becoming a vegetarian in the early 90s taught me how to be more adventurous using pulses beans and grains! I now grow as much of my own veg as my veg plot will allow! All helps with the pennies . I think you are a great inspiration to those of your age group for whom cooking from scratch is a challenge in itself! ❤️❤️

I’m a home cook. I learned by cooking my own food as a child in the 1980’s in the USA. I also learned by watching my mom and grandma. As an adult I married a man from Mexico and I’m blessed to learn authentic Mexican food from my mother in law.

I'm a single empty nester on a fixed income. I still cook and bake for myself even through arthritis; it just tastes better. I love seeing what other budget cooks make. I like that you both batch and single serving cook. I do the same, depending on circumstances. Thanks for sharing. Give Jack a treat for me. 🙂

Yes shopping, cooking from scratch and budgeting is definitely classed as a hobby. I've found you just can't do it half assed and expect to save money and eat well. But it does take time which is why I class it as one of my hobbies. Frugal Queen says time is your superpower when budgeting/saving money 🙂

I'm 58 and along with learning a lot from watching my Mum we had cookery and needlework lessons at school, honestly it's the only real stuff I ever learned. I can make a roux sauce and a French seam from memory but can I remember how the Norwegian Fjords were formed? nope. Interestingly my daughter went to the same school and 30 years on every domestic science room had gone, replaced by computer rooms. It's a shame, cooking from scratch for your budget and health is such a valuable skill that's been lost to the greater emphasis on technology. Of course you can learn stuff on YouTube but it's not the same as making Queen of Puddings and carrying it home on the bus in a giant Quality Street tin. Love your channel and you and Jack, love and support from me and my cats Colin and Malcolm ❤😻😻

Mushrooms are very versatile. If you have a mincer you can mince them (if you don't then they frequently appear in charity shops) and use them like you would minced beef they absorb flavours really well, a lot of people can't tell the difference between minced mushrooms and minced meat in a savoury dish the texture is more meaty than just chopped mushrooms. Can be frozen once minced.

You can slice them and freeze them, use straight from freezer.

You can slice them then dry them. Much more intense flavour once dried. You can also grind them up into powder once dried for a really intense seasoning powder for your savoury dishes.

I love the way Jack always comes for a nosey at your shopping🥰

It definitely looks much healthier than last week's.

Hi Rechenda, I’m 51 and remember my mum cooking everything from scratch, you basically had to eat was what you were given, roast dinners, stew, liver and onions, fish and th best homemade chips on a Friday. My mum used to bake all the time, scones, mince and onion pie. Proper homemade comfort food, also always making pastry. Fond childhood memories❤. Xx

I think I'm a good cook but still always learning! I studied food tech at school which taught me a few key recipes and also to think about the science behind cooking, and very importantly gave me the confidence to give things a go.

Since then a love of food, often being on a budget and getting inspiration from cook books and fab YouTubers like yourself has helped me expand my repertoire 😊

I learned to cook at home as both my parents cooked. I also realised you have to learn to cook when you leave home and are on a budget you can't afford takeaways especially with the cost of living and it's good to come up with recipes based on what you have. You can use the courgette fried off with onion and garlic or add some feta and tomatoes. You can also grown these in containers they taste amazing from the garden. You could make a pasta sauce with the courgettes and onion and garlic. Also you could mix the mushrooms with the bacon or ham. You could bake the potatoes or made a potato salad with the bacon. Or make a salad with the lettuce and tomato.

I can cook, used to be a therapist and used cooking as therapy, which is ironic because I hated cooking. It was so useful for those I did groups with though and, actually, it was good for me because now I’m retired I have the skills to cook on a budget. So, in fact, I’m enjoying it more and I enjoy shopping (as long as I can keep away from the biscuits and chocolate aisle)

I can cook. My mom taught me quite a few from scratch and modest meals as a child/pre-teen and then I taught myself using cookbooks in my teens (before the internet!) I love grocery shopping and cooking. Definitely use convenience things these days but plenty of scratch cooking for the family.

My grandma taught me. She basically taught me how to do everything housewife wise, and now I'm just living with my dog. 😅

Food shopping is definitely my hobby too - I would never shop online because I enjoy hunting for yellow stickers! I had my daughter when I was 18, although we ate fairly healthily I did use far more convenience foods when she was growing up (she's now 30) because life was so busy. Now I batch cook from scratch for health reasons and try to mainly avoid processed foods. Glad to see you're having a healthier week! Xx
