It happened...! Elon Musk & SpaceX Just Saved NASA billions of dollars from Russia
During the last 17 years, the US Congress has authorized budgets totaling $58.5 billion for various NASA deep-space exploration plans.
By late summer, 2022, that total is likely to exceed $65 billion, most of which has been spent on developing a heavy-lift rocket and deep-space capsule that may carry humans into deep space.
However, after all that tax money, NASA's deep-space plans remain grounded!
Fortunately, the coming together of America's space agency and its most audacious space company, SpaceX, saved NASA billions of dollars!
How did SpaceX do that?
All this and more in today's episode of Great SpaceX!

Eight years ago, the business of space changed.
In 2014, NASA tapped SpaceX and Boeing to build two new human-rated spacecraft, the Crew Dragon and Starliner, respectively. Each company would first prove its ship capable of safe flight, then perform as many as six crewed missions to the International Space Station.
Boeing hasn't yet been able to complete its test flights and hasn't performed even one crewed mission.
But SpaceX?
That contract has proved a resounding success!
It is Musk's firm that has delivered NASA a human-rated spacecraft in its hour of need, with Russia continuing to raise prices for rides into space nearly a decade after the space shuttle’s retirement.
So far, SpaceX has completed five crewed spaceflights for NASA: the 2020 Demo-2 mission that marked America's return to crewed spaceflight, followed by Crew-1 later that year, Crew-2 and Crew-3 in 2021, and Crew-4 blasted off on April 27.

Kudos to SpaceX for not gouging the launch prices when they could have increased their cost substantially and still beat the competition's price point.

Awesome job SpaceX, StarShip will soon fly. All other rockets 🚀 will be obsolete

It's also worth noting that Soyuz only seats three, while SpaceX can send four astronauts per flight.

The numbers show the worth of reusability and yet the big competitors are not moving in that direction. What arrre they thinking?!

At least NASA does something (in theory). We are about to send $40B to Ukraine. 2x the yearly NASA budget. Shameful.

Don't forget they get a trunk full of cargo taken up with them and bring down a trunk full of trash which gets burned up with the trunk when they re-enter.

No one should be surprised that Boeing’s price per seat would come in slightly higher than that Roscosmos charges, that’s how profit seeking bureaucrats like the ones running Boeing/ULA work… 🙄

It annoys me how NASA are still stuck in a 20th century way of working with rockets..Single use rockets are so far out of fashion now, such a waste of resources and money

Thank you for the specific accountability for each Rocket Company.
Yes Elon Musk and SpaceX Team save the NASA and bringing hope to all Astronauts.
All the plans for Space Explorations and Establishments will be realized by STARSHIP.

Why doesn't NASA use its government influence to get the FAA off of Elon's back?

I'm okay with paying slightly more for Starliner than flying on a Russian rocket because it subsidizes rocket development in the US, but there needs to be a penalty paid by companies that fail to meet contractual obligations to NASA. Something like not getting to submit offers for 2-years or something.

Lesson learned: for nonprofit making products and services (research, education, infrastructure) we need to use government to fund the activity and the profit making segment of the economy to produce the product and service.

Though saving money is generally a good thing, a billion dollars pales in comparison to the trillions that the government squanders every year.

so, what is better for next...redo the space station, do a moon station, , mars? personally i would like to see us build the first vestage of our star trek enterprise explorer vessel so we can use it as a cargo ship...i'd love to see tons of rocks come back from our mars missions. what if theres new metals or an abundance of rare or extinct ones they're essensially extinct to some people when they become too rare, because those people have no access to them...thus to them, , they're extinct but yeah, i'd like to see us build a ship that can go from orbit to orbit and sit there... and of course work out a more sustainable way to unload the cargo...maybe float it down

Excellent as always. Is it true that FWS has OK’d orbital launches from Boca? If so, what is FAA still waiting on?

Time for Spacex to start charging for government the cost of delays!

The SLS is a perfect example of how the Fed Gov works. Spends a lot, builds something way over complex, and ultimately doesn't work.
If it ever flies again it will be the last time. and the sad part is, it will fly just so the Gov's ego can say they accomplished something.

I am not at all an Elon fan, however he does have a way to attract the right "brains" for his companies.
