Tracks like "Boom Boom Festival", "Draw Your Brakes", "Mr. Harry Skank", "Swing Easy", all taught me so much and started me following the original versions of so many riddims !

When I was starting out playing, i realized that the real teachings were in those old school tunes and so I absorbed Jackie Jackson, Boris Gardiner, Bagga Walker, Fams, Flabba and Robbie. I consider that transition into rockers to be crucial also in understanding the tecbnjque and articulation and they are my signature now.

Jackie Jackson's playing on Toots' "Funky Kingston" and "In the Dark" is as good as it gets! Another of my favorites of his is actually Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion." It seems so technically simple, but it's hard to get the feel right!

Outstanding stuff Don! I play bass and sing in a rocksteady band here in California, and we do a couple of these great tunes. I'm so happy you mentioned Duke Reid and the Treasure Isle catalog, it ruled the rocksteady era until Coxsone/Studio One overtook it when JA music transitioned into reggae. Much of this decline was due to Reid's forbidding (for the most part) Rasta lyrics in his studio. But the Treasure Isle catalog, with the Techniques, Paragons, John Holt, U Roy, Alton Ellis, the Melodians etc. holds some of the greatest Jamaican music ever made. And of course the marvelous bass work of Jackie Jackson was key. Besides cracking the US charts with Desmond Dekker's "Israelites, " Jackson also powered (along with the great drummer Winston Grennan) Paul Simon's worldwide reggae hit "Mother and Child Reunion." Simon wisely went to the source, recording at Dynamic Studio in Kingston with the cream of reggae musicians, which of course included Jackie Jackson.
World of thanks again Don for making this video! btw is that shirt you're wearing available for sale?
