Bolivia wants its coastline back - or so it says!
After losing the War of the Pacific to Chile in the late 1800s, Bolivia lost its coastal territory and has sought access to the sea ever since.
In 2013, Bolivia brought its case to the International Court of Justice, claiming that Chile had an obligation to "negotiate a sovereign access to the sea for Bolivia." However, the court ruled in 2018 that Chile did not have such an obligation.
Bolivia’s desire for a coastline is so strong that it still maintains a navy to this day, despite being landlocked.
