It's hard to believe that actually effects the taste that much

Someone needs to do a vid on all these and see which ones actually make any discernible difference to the outcome. As someone with no experience in artisanal coffee my gut says “You’re doing a whole lotta nothing”, so I’d be interested to see how much is hocus pocus coffee snobbery and how much of it improves it well enough that it should just be part of production since it’s so effective.

Edit: And if it’s just for therapeutics through ritual like a tea ceremony, where doing the thing is more important for the outcome of the performer than the outcome of the product, then sure, do whatever makes you happy.

There’s a reason that typical speciality cafes don’t do this, generally we just slap the group head down on the table to break the clumps, check to make sure the weight of grind is okay and then slap again. Clumps break down, extraction is still beautiful and workflow isn’t slow

I don’t see a difference in the first and second extraction

That WDT is available on etsy for $7.99. Made buy a guy in California. Just purchased one last week. A little fiddly to build/assemble, so you might want to pay the extra couple bucks and buy the assembled version. But it works great, and the wires are thin.

The last video I watched from you (5 minutes ago) LITERALLY threw this tool out saying you don’t need it.

Toothpicks, needles - really anything. It will not affect the taste of coffee that much, u can easily bounce it a couple times, hit it by the table and you're done. It's not that deep. Don't waste your money.

The point of tamping is to compress the entire dose, so if you're having uneven extractions it's not clumps from the grinder: you're just not tamping hard or even enough.

I still want one of these though 🙃

Imo you can declump with a small whisk or fork. I'd argue a puck screen or 30lbs tamper press are better tools to spend money on.

Preferred the first "extraction" without the needles.

I found out if I make a drill attachment clamp for the filter it makes coffee grounds fly out everywhere. Just wanted to share my experiences.

Ummm the one tool I need is an espresso machine.

I don’t have one.

If you're only going to buy one tool, make it a wire thingy, so that when you tamp it down, it does nothing.
But also, you should get a tamper, I guess.
And an espresso machine.
And the water filter thingy.

Clumps don't cause channeling, water breaks them down instantly, because coffee grounds are hydrophilic. For me wdt causes channeling.

I feel like if ur only gonna buy 1 tool it should be a tamper but what do I know I’m not a professional 🤷🏽‍♀️

i don’t drink coffee but I am curious. Does it really affect the taste?

when i try to WDT, it usually just pushes the offee against the wall of the portafilter, creating a craterwell in the middle of the filter. I dont know if it's user error or a crappy WDT tool

How would you work around the metal-on-metal sound?
