As fascinating devices, Arc lighters rely on a few sneaky secrets. The science behind how they work is not what you may expect! Seriously, you need to buy one of these things. This episode was filmed on vacation in Seattle.

I've got a Zippo arc lighter insert. It's so cool. It looks like a normal zippo insert, but rechargeable and with electric arcs. Very very cool. Works great. It's safer than butane or lighter fluid. If you smoke, you can safely inhale the first drag without worrying about breathing in lighter fluid.

As a kid, me and a bud were playing with a Model T spark coil and lit cigarets off the arc. It made lots of ozone too, and we joked we'd probably die of lung cancer. That was about 60 years ago.

Nice vid as always! You could also explain how the lighter creates two separate plasma channels. Also as far as I'm concerned, the record for electric arc temperature is 99, 000°F or 55, 000°C. Look up water stabilised high power arc, this concept is like more than 50 years old. Basically when you rise current through a powerful arc, the temperature doesn't rise more than 7, 000-10, 000 °C because arc gets wider and the greater dissipated power heats up larger volume of gas to the same temperature. However, some guy named Gerdien(not sure what's his name in English) created an arc, that goes through hole in the water cooled ceramic thingy, so an arc can not get wider than the diameter of the hole, hence more current now gives temperature increase to like 30k °C or something like that. After that some other guys developed an arc that is completly surrounded by swirling water, and they did get that sweet 55k°C. Boom, the more you know.

So it's pretty safe to assume that the output voltage of a similar arc lighter would be around 3kV? Also that the current output would be around 5mA? I'm trying to redesign your arc lighter Tesla coil video just because I like a challenge lol. Thanks in advance

And you don’t have to start smoking to justify owning one of these; - I’ve found they’re killer for lighting fireworks, anything with a wick, and vaporizing the insulation off tiny wires that are near impossible to strip without breaking some of the strands ... Just remember to pull them gently between some folded 400 grit sand paper to get the black residue off…

As a smoker I use this lighter and the normal gas ones. The tesla lighter is great, to ignite a cigarette when its windy. But to light a barbecue a lighter with high gas flame its better. But all in all this tesla lighters are great, but dont forget to charge the accu because it will be empty relativly fast when normal used.

Brilliant! Much more intriguing than a flic&clic bic old school on the tape deck.. Someone asks hey you got a light and i say hooo yes do i ever *insert mini physics lecture and demo here* and *pow minds blown* Thanks for the super science u rock!

Bought 1 of these last week.
Gave it a 9 hour charge that ran out after 3 uses!

Yeah, one of my prepper friends gifted me a flashlight with a plasma lighter. I was unaware of how it worked. Thanks.

This channel was so quaint 5 years ago 😍

Non-smoker here, but I bought one of these to put in my disaster preparedness kit.
Thought it'd be fun to look at through my FLIR TG130 thermal camera.
Since the camera's upper limit is 302º, only the electrodes warming up is visible.

Still confused, but this video made me subscribe

But why do the arcs form diagonally? Shouldn't they follow the shortest path?

would it be bad to use that on something like a smart watch to get the screen off by heating it? because its electrical?

Nice. Love your channel. Can you share some insights on plasma activated water/plasma filtering?

I wonder if it is possible to construct a Vaping device (e-cig) with this technology ? Can this heat and vaporize the eliquid for vaping ? Traditionally the metal coil/wick system is used in all vaping devices and I was wondering if this tech could replace it. 🤔🤔

Hey Jay, I like your video so much, keep going, tell us more about science not just about plasma, you can think about others, waiting for your next video, your big fan from Hong Kong.👍😄
