90s was the coming of age decade for me. Lots of good times, laughs, good music, friends and just living each day like we were going to live forever. We started the decade in 1990 dancing to ice ice baby and ended it in1999 by graduating high school and starting college. What a beautiful time it was.

I honestly didn’t know Monica could sing like this. Because of my age, I’ve only retrospectively explored a few of her hits, including her duet with Brandy, and I’ve seen videos of a few of her live performances in recent times. Really pleasantly surprised.

It’s clear the standards back then were so much HIGHER. An audience now would have been going crazy for a 15 yo performing like that with an orotund voice and a plethora of musical stylings at their disposal that, in this performance, were so masterfully handled and balanced.

I think it’s very tempting for a young preternatural talent to overuse stylings and vocal power but she knew even here to not let the vocal styling/ power override the song narrative/ structure. So so rare and impressive.

Some of y’all might throw stones at me but I feel her perfomance here is giving anointed in the tradition and stylings of Anita Baker. And I think she is as good as Anita here.

It does seem like female contraltos don’t get as much credit for their prowess as the sopranos. Hence, in part, I think the Brandy/ Monica contrast in terms of success/ career.
