To be clear, Darwin simply explained the mechanisms of change in the natural world between species. He never espoused social Darwinism as a way to run a society.

In the late 1700s, Nations were a pretty radical idea. Most people identified locally with their family, village, or larger religious community. Nationalism originally came about out of the enlightenment. Revolutions were happening all over Europe, Haiti, etc because people believed they 1. Were a nation and 2. Had the right to govern themselves as a nation. Nation states allowed leaders to build up their militaries, such as Napoleon. Territories couldn’t be agreed upon so there were many wars in the 1800s. This eventually leads to the Armenian genocide and holocaust. Some nations that formed were racist and some excluded women. To create these nations leaders insisted nationalism must come before all other identities. They searched for ties like common history, language, shared tradition & religion to show they had a deep past together. They created stories and myths to support the idea of their nation. Nationalism started as a fight for freedom against monarchies, yet has provoked some of our greatest atrocities when the pendulum swung too far. Are nations here to stay? Will some new idea sweep the world? What could have prevented the efforts of many to create a homogeneous mythologized unity?
