Juice’s journey to Jupiter

This animation shows the proposed trajectory of ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explore (Juice) mission to Jupiter.

Based on a launch in June 2022, the spacecraft will make a series of gravity-assist flybys at Earth (May 2023, September 2024 and November 2026), Venus (October 2023) and Mars (February 2025) before arriving in the Jupiter system in October 2029.

The animation ends at the Jupiter orbit insertion point, but the planned 3.5 year mission will see Juice not only orbit Jupiter, but also make dedicated flybys of the moons Europa, Callisto and Ganymede, before orbiting the largest moon, Ganymede.

this is an awesome task of calculations

No matter how many times I see this process, I wonder at the minds that make this sort of thing

I will be waiting in 2031 for Jupiter photo

I love it. Too bad that we have to wait for 2029 to get all these new, juicy science to get done.

This video is amazing, thank you. You ought to be putting this in press articles, to explain the complexity of getting to the final destination.

Separately, i'd love to see a video on how you work all of this out. Kerbal Space Program allowed something similar, by setting burns to change orbits and a simulation of where that would end up, but that was very much a step by step approach. Do you start from the end point and work backwards? I suspect it could be a good watch. Maybe one for @scottmanley ?

Good luck today!

Incredible. It's an understatement to say it must have been difficult to calculate all the necessary fly-by data in order to arrive at Jupiter at the right time, place and speed.

Hey maybe if this juice had some juice in her tanks she could have gotten to Jupiter without so many gravity assists. Man that sure takes a long time to reach Jupiter per the animation.

WOW! Amazing video! Good to understand that spacer travel nowadays is not the simple "from point to point". Forget about StarWars like phisics....

Damn esa back at it again with those gravity assists

The finest of calculations look like a drunk accidentally getting to the right spot.

Wow! I'm 40 and never knew they had to do a "corkscrew" flight to get there!

Will it be updated with month and year since launch in 2023?

Great mission i can't wait to see what they find. I'm not sure that JUICE is as catchy a name as Mariner or Voyager though 😆

I wish we would use all our knowledge and science in a positive way instead of killing eachother. I bet if we would combine our energy and efforts we could salve most of our problems.

I'm counting 7 years, is that correct? Other vids here talk about 8, so, why?

MrKillerno

so it will take 7 and a half years to get to Jupiter
