Gold is very dense and can be flattened out to an atom thick. It's also very good at conducting electricity. It also makes for good shielding from radiation. So it's logical that they would use it.

Well It'd be a nydus worm because they have such a caring personality.

I mean come on, it spends all day having sharp, spike encrusted monsters marching through its innards, then getting sliced up or blasted without even having a way to fight back. And does Nydy ever complain? No. It just does its just without a single harsh word. Truly a noble, caring soul.
