It's important to note that Gandalf was immediately aware of the deception because the Mouth had Frodo's shirt and cloak but had Sam's dagger and only spoke of one hobbit. If they had both, the Mouth would have said so, even if they had tortured one. The mouth of Sauron in the books is such a smart and twisted person... I absolutely love him in the books... His insults and threats are genuinely scary

I've always imagined the Mouth of Sauron as a dark and twisted version of Aragorn, if he had been raised by Sauron instead of Elrond. Two remnants of a dying race on ideological opposing sides. I know book Aragorn would not of cut off the Mouth of Sauron's head but it was cool to see in the movie. The messenger to Erebor was most likely a Nazgul as Sauron would trust no other servant to locate the one ring.

I think he is very high in the ranks of Mordor. Basically lieutenant of Barad-Dûr and the assistant to Sauron. Extremely important character and vital to the plot that's only present in a deleted scene.

I think Sauron would have ways to ensure absolute loyalty from those who have gained (magical) power from his service. Also Sauron rules a realm, he would have many servants from a number of realms, the ambassador could be anyone who is (relatively) loyal and trusted. He would not have had a ring because he had a physical form, Gandalf can perceive the spirit realm and Tolkien generally gives us a clue as to a beings 'otherworldliness'.

I believe the Mouth came out to get information about who or what had invaded Mordor. If Frodo had been caught (as the Mouth implied) they certainly would have known it, for Sauron would have regained his Ring. The variety of items that had been collected pointed to the elves, hobbits, and men; Sauron must have been very bemused.

The mouth of sauron is one of the most iconic Tolkien legendarium characters. He's a really fun hero character in lord of the rings battle for middle earth 2. Even then he has a unsettling vibe which is what is so cool.
