In May 1864, two major campaigns were launched by the United States against the Confederacy: The Overland Campaign pitting Ulysses S. Grant against Robert E. Lee in Virginia and The Atlanta Campaign pitting William T. Sherman against Joseph E. Johnston in Georgia. The Atlanta Campaign wasn't the bloodiest Campaign of the two, but it was arguably the most important in 1864 because it gave the Union and Abraham Lincoln's election Campaign a morale boost, prior to the 1864 elections in November. This video begins the Battle of Ezra Church.

The remark Sherman made at the end, "Let them beat their brains out" was smart as Lee did the same thing at Fredericksburg, repulsing wave after wave of Union assaults that came in piecemeal fashion which led to mass casualties for the Federals. Sherman knew just how to bleed the rebels dry and minimize his own casualties as he had been working to do most of the campaign. An important point in a battle is to have the right commanders in the right places, like Sherman and his army and corps commanders. Keep up the good work! Can't wait for your video series on Hood's Tennessee campaign!
