Like the NY to LA example, I've done the same thing. Utah to Missouri to Nebraska and back, more than 2500 miles, 4 or 5 consecutive days (can't remember). Drove in 5 to 8 hour chunks, slept in 7 to 8 hour chunks, used the 2 to 3 hour breaks for shipper/receiver time, or fuel/shower/meal/take a walk time. It can be done with a little planning and a clear knowledge of how the rule works. There's nearly zero time wasted and it doesn't have to destroy your circadian rhythm either.

I never take 30s if I can help it. I’m a Yard Move guy. As long as I’m inside the fence at the shipper/ receiver, I’m On Duty Yard Move. By the time I drop/ hook and warm my coffee up, that’s my 30. The split sleeper comes off as complex on the surface but once you use it a few times, it makes sense.

What happens when you drive 5 then off duty for 3 with your split sleeper toggle on. Then you find out your back haul is canceled and there is on other one for that day because it a holiday weekend. Now you have enough time showing on you HOS, and can make it back to your terminal. I did that in time, then logged out for the holiday weekend. Next trip out I had a full clock, but was in violation because I didn’t take the 7 in the sleeper berth that last day.
