McEnany Mistakenly Calls Amy Coney Barrett a Rhodes Scholar

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany incorrectly identified President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, as a Rhodes scholar on Thursday.

McEnany made the reference at the White House briefing while listing a series of Barrett's academic and personal accomplishments.

"She graduated summa cum laude from Notre Dame Law School," McEnany said, adding, "she also is a Rhodes scholar."

A few minutes later a reporter challenged McEnany's assertion, telling her, "I'm not sure that that's true."

A second reporter piped up, "She attended Rhodes College."

As it turns out, Barrett never received a Rhodes Scholarship, but rather a bachelor's degree from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.

McEnany did admit to the error, saying, "my bad."

I bet anytime someone with a Rhodes College degree gets confused with being a Rhodes Scholar, they just smile silently and roll with it. "I am a scholar, I went to Rhodes College - therefore I AM a Rhodes Scholar!"

In 1985 they changed the name of the college from "Southwestern at Memphis" to "Rhodes College, " over the strong objections of many of the alumni, myself included. The rationale was that the name "Southwestern at Memphis" was confusing: "Is that an insurance company, or do they print Bibles?"
Dr. Peyton N. Rhodes was a physics professor at Southwestern from 1925 to 1949, and then president of the college from 1949 to 1965 [1]. I met him a few times: once officially as a Freshman in 1963, and then occasionally around the campus over the next couple of years. I graduated in 1967, so he didn't get to sign my diploma.
Dr. Rhodes was a nice guy, but I always felt that if his name had been John Smurd, nobody would have suggested renaming the place "John Smurd College." And if anyone mistakes "Rhodes College" for anything else named after somebody else named "Rhodes, " they are usually not immediately corrected.
Ms. McEnany made exactly the mistake they expected: it's just that this time, it made the nationwide news.
And FWIW, a few real "Rhodes Scholars" are Bill Clinton (1968, honorary), George Stephanopoulos (1984), Cory Booker (1992), and Rachel Maddow (1995) [2].
