This scene is a perfect representation of his mindset. It's not that he has no empathy... or sympathy for that matter. He actually cares a lot. But his obsession with balance makes him cold, and it's what destroyed him and all of his relationships.

What we see here is a moment of tender kindness from Thanos to gamora, a glimmer of compassion in a man that seems devoid of anything like it. What we do not see are the numberless children being callously gunned down directly behind them. Where is his loving compassion for them? Thanos loves the idea of he himself being a beneficent master, a servant of the greater good. I don't get the sense that he cares about the actual greater good, but that he is the origin of that greater good.

This is a perfect demonstration of how there are good and bad sides to everyone. He was responsible for the deaths of all those people and yet, he was a perfect father figure for this simple, small child😕

Even if he was cruel, there were moments where Thanos was a genuine father to Gamora. People disagree with me, but I’d say this is one of those times. He distracts her from conflict surrounding them as he tries to comfort her with what is actually a present. Don’t get me wrong, I hate Thanos. But you can’t discredit when he was actually a good father figure. Before the end, he truly cared about her.
