Effectively, trade between China and the United States is halted.

That's an embargo, not a tariff at this point.

145% will put many small and medium retailers out of business.

china exporting to US market only accounts for 11% of its total export , while total trade only accounts for 15.8% of its GDP, so exporting to US only accounts for around 0.47% of its GDP, china is not japan or south korea or germany or vietnam, exporting accounts for over 90% of their GDP, china is world largest consumer market, its domestic economy is most part of its GDP, and it is continuing decrease this year, , its has decreased from 17% in 2022 to 11% in 2024 and diverting export to other markets, by contrast, china is only supply chain US has for goods, even all those built in Vietnam or mexico or anywhere are either built by chinese manufactures there or made up with Chinese parts or material, so china will not hurt but US store will be either empty or really expensive

I visited China late 80's on an escorted tour struck by the amount of people on bicycles a group of us were ferried across Tiananmen Sq on rickshaws a policeman blew a whistle & everyone stopped as we were given the right of way. Within 40 yrs it has become this mass manufacturing hub modern roads infrastructure high speed trains modern cities mass transit systems at the forefront new technologies etc yet visiting the USA is like visiting a country stuck in a time loop decaying infrastructure, still reliant on cars that are only relevant to the USA little or no high speed trains you do question where all the money is being spent.

Tariffs of 54% and tariffs at more than 100% doesn’t matter. All the costs will be given back to US consumers. The consumers, especially small businesses only have 2 choices, buy it or not. If they can’t find an alternative, they will have to wind up their business. If the Chinese product is the only option, the business owner will still buy it at more than 100%. And a lot of products are made in China, maybe more than 3/4 of US products. So China have stopped the cargo containers from travelling to US which means very soon US will run out of stock. Even if there are alternatives, they can’t fulfill the massive demand, so a lot of Americans are going to get hurt.

China used to buy a lot of American goods. That is, U.S. Treasury bonds. The Chinese people worked hard and earned money, and honestly bought U.S. Treasury bonds. This went on for many years. But Americans are too greedy, they are not satisfied, and keep borrowing money from you. Seeing the growing number of borrowings, who still believes that he intends to pay back the money. Now they say that they have suffered a loss and are bullied by China. Did China force you to borrow money for pleasure? Too greedy! Now that the United States does not buy Chinese goods, China can't make money. At the same time, China finally doesn't have to be forced to lend money to the United States. But China can live on deposits for a few years, what do you have, the United States? Only debts. China is willing to do business with other countries in the world except the United States. Because the people of other countries are hardworking, fair, and kind. Americans are too greedy and unreasonable. If we were neighbors, we would not deal with such people, let alone doing business now. Now China is enduring the pain and fighting back against the United States firmly, not only for its own interests, but more importantly, it is to set an example for the world and give hope to mankind. When a bully bullies you, besides kissing his ass, you have another choice, fight back. Maybe he is not as powerful as you think. All countries unite, and the United States is just an ordinary country, nothing special.
Now you kneel down, and in 4 years, another Trump II comes and makes more excessive demands. What will you do? Keep kneeling and kiss your ass?
The country bumpkin will not kneel down, nor will he kiss your ass. The country bumpkin will fight back now and ask you to pay back!

Sooner or later, smuggling Chinese goods will get higher profit than smuggling drugs. And then, underground market will be a business.
