Tool Tips: Channel Lock Pliers

Most pliers are useless. Use these instead.

"Slip-joint" is the name for "this piece of garbage" that have been around forever. "Channellock" is a brand name and made in Meadville PA. They are commonly called "water pump" pliers as a style. Probably vecause they worked well to tighten thegland nut on a water pump.

Fun vid, Ty. I was considering a change from Channellocks, so I took a look at the Knipex factory on-line tour. Looked good until the final third of their show. Their narrative changed from about tool quality to them congratulating themselves for their European social agenda application. For me it's about tool quality and not about paying for America's enemies' lifestyle. (So, I'm staying with Channellock blue.)

I have a personal prejudice against channel locks. Mostly because our operators like to use them instead of a proper wrench and chew up bolts, and since I'm the maintenance guy for our shift it gets under my skin (they also round out metric allen head bolts all the time because they assume everything is Imperial).

I will say though, channel locks are the perfect alternative to a bunghole wrench 👍

How about the proper orientation depending on if you are tightening or loosening? One way will grip tighter when twisting and the wrong way will tend to slip. That would be a tip.

If you don't know of the many uses of common slip joint pliers, then there's nothing I can learn from you.

There’s a use for all types of pliers. You’re not going to use the channel lock pliers the same as you would with the little pair of adjustable joint ones.

Tonge and groove and slip joints are two different kind of pliers, so, why you compare them? Would you compare a Sedan with a SUV? Stupid video!
