I'm wondering if the "ring" (flexible looking part) of the boot closest to the connector is removable or fixed (molded part of boot)? If not fixed, I'm wondering if I could replace them with color coded rings that are available for Neutrik connectors...

I use cable matters XLR cables for indoor use. The best advice I can give is to push the cable past the strain relief to where the bare wires soldered to the pins have a decent bend to them. If you allow the wires to straighten out, often times what happens is they will turn into a guitar string and eventually cause wire(s) to microflex from vibrations and break the connection. I've resoldered the wires on them twice in the past year. I've since put much more slack on the bare wires and will report back if the strain relief will actually hold in that position. If it doesn't, that's a wrap given time due to the reason I mentioned earlier. Hope that helps.

That connection between ground and chasis shouldn't be there and might cause some problems? I believe now for pro audio signal ground to chasis ground should be left for the machine side to decide if they want them connected but not cables?
