Who Were The Zealots?: A Historical and Biblical Overview

Показать описание
The Zealots were one of the four sects of Jews (in the first century) along with the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essences. They were a group of revolutionaries who opposed Roman rule and their occupation of Judea. Their group was named after their characteristic feature which was religious zeal, or a piety and passion for God's law and rule. They would not hesitate to engage in armed combat in their fight for freedom.

In this video, I provide a historical and biblical overview of the Zealots and then consider how an ordinary Zealot (not Simon the Zealot) would likely respond to the Jesus of history.

I especially appreciated your analogies at the beginning, likening these biblical terms (Pharisee, Sadducee, Zealots) to modern-day ideology. Very interesting, thank you!

Great lecture.
I don’t agree with those who suggest Josephus was coerced by his Roman captivity. Josephus both defends Nero yet honestly list his killings.
Josephus doesn’t list the Zealots as being relevant, probably because he considered them a sub sect of the Pharisees?
We must remember that Josephus lived it.

So just going by the intro, I thought they just refused to pay taxes not necessarily opposed Roman rule of Palestine.

I got confused w/ your comparison between the 1st-century zealots who actively worked towards violently repelling the Roman occupying force from their nation with libertarians of today who are not confronted w/ a violent occupying force that denies them all human rights and dignity. The zealots would be comparable to the anti-colonial freedom fighters of Algeria, Kenya, Vietnam, South Africa, and Palestine.

You made a mistake at the beginning, it was the Sadducees who were the conservative ones, and the Pharisees were liberal, if we adopt modern nomenclature.

Don't forget the sicarii...daggar men..the most radical of the zealots.

The zealots actually sound more like ultra-nationalist fascists of today, but it’s telling that you compare them to modern American libertarians
