Another video in the Basic Map Reading Series. There are 5 Basic Colors to a map. These colors give valuable information on what a navigator can expect to see on the ground. This can be extremely valuable for finding civilization, shelter, water, food, supplies, or finding the best location to be found by search and rescue.

Josh:
Please create an additional navigation video and show us how to find our own location on a map if we have a compass.

Love the videos on map reading! I've been having trouble finding good Topo maps with contour lines, etc. Everything on USGS seems to point to downloadable & printable map. Is there a reliable place to order paper maps like these?

Josh,

What is the best way to verify the accuracy of my
compass so I will use it and trust the bearings? I took 5 devices ( Suunto
MCll, Silva Guide 426, my cell phone, old Silva Boy Scout Compass 1051, and A Casio
Pathfinder Watch) aligning the edges to grid north (top of map). I got 5
different bearings. I’m flummoxed. Talking about readings ranging from 48
degrees to 86 degrees. I don’t know if any of them are correct.  Any ideas on verifying the accuracy before you head into the woods?
