Sara Dietschy & I Compare the GH5 to the Olympus E-M1X

Sara Dietschy reached out to me on Twitter and asked if we could collab in Santa Monica to see the Olympus E-M1X EM1X in action! She wanted to compare it to her GH5 and see how the colors, autofocus, and IBIS performance was! This video shows our first impressions of the camera!

What did you guys think of the Panasonic GH5 vs Olympus EM1X comparison? Which was better? The E-M1X or the Lumix GH5. Same autofocus as the GH5S.

Comparing apples to oranges.

Gh5 and A7iii cannot do half of what the EM1X can do for its target consumer.

The GH5 at first was like..."Hey, I can autofocus!" but then it was like, "Nope, sorry." ;D The next small camera from Olympus might be a real game changer for micro 4/3rds if they can keep or improve on video AF over this E-M1X. That said, the E-M1X does look super appealing as a hybrid with all of those tactile controls and weather resistance. We will see how quickly or if it drops in price. I could see it being popular in the $1500 to $2000 range if it ever gets that low, though considering how robust the camera looks I do understand the asking price.

I find that the olympus white balance always comes up a tad magenta in the hue with skin tones. I don't know why, but to match it with the cannon, you can phase shift 15 degrees and get great skin tones.

The Olympus is weather sealed too and has a nice interface. That extra battery compartment is useful. Having said all that, I love my GH5 and XLR adapter

Haha, the key with the new GH5 firmware is single point AF rather than Face Detection. The part where she's talking about AF at the end was hilarious because it was so rough, hahahaha.
I totally agree that the GH5 is great for the price, but it's also great that there's more competition. Everyone needs to keep stepping it up.

Olympus e-m1 x is great for photography ... for video the GH5 is unbeatable when it comes to codecs and picture quality. You see that esp when compared to a Sony A7 III. So when I have to decide between autofocus and picture quality, then of course I go with picture quality. (And I alway shoot manually ;) ). When AF is really important to me ... I would use Canon ;)

What's the point of 10 bit if you cannot rely on AF.... You can then go ahead and get Sony F3 and you will have superior image quality from a true cinema line camera at the price of GH5

Note that the 15mm 1.7 is not an stabilized lens. The GH5 has a dual IS feature that makes footage even more stabilized if it uses a lens with OSS like the 12-35mm 2.8 etc

I use an Olympus OM-D E-M5 MkII... waiting for the MkIII. I like Olympus... but the E-M1X is not a vlogging camera, too big, too expensive... I hope they make the E-M5 MkIII a GH5 killer.

For most people my age, cost is no longer a factor (just means a tiny bit less inheritance for our kids). I think for most folks like me that have been buying SLRs since the early 1960's, it would be nice to see reviews that were independent of cost.

E-M1 II just came out with the new 3.0 firmware that adds phase detect autofocus in video. Could you do a test to confirm that it's just as good as the E-M1X? If so that might make it a contender for the best vlogging cam.. being only $1000-$1500, awesome stabilization, autofocus, flipout screen, and that crazy build quality

I remember her making a sorta parody video on Casey Neistat (another person with a tough last name) that blew up.
I also saw that her BF, John Hill was in Cali! Cool to see you guys went to hang out and compare camera.
The E-M1X seems great for a niche photography audience. But pretty much the E-M1 Mark II suffices for many and the video crowd will stick to Panasonic (GH5, G9, GH5S).
