Ruling People Power Party holds nat'l convention, names Han Dong-hoon new party leader

국민의힘 전당대회서 새 지도부 선출, 당대표 한동훈 "민심에 반응할 것"

Earlier this evening, the ruling People Power Party held its national convention in the city of Goyang near Seoul where they announced the party's new leadership.
Our political correspondent Lee Shi-hoo reports.

Following four days of voting among eligible party members and other citizens, the People Power Party on Tuesday announced the final winners of its leadership race.

"Han Dong-hoon has been announced as the new leader of the ruling People Power Party at its national convention, winning a majority with over 320-thousand votes."

Han beat three other candidates, winning over 62 percent of the total votes cast.
In his acceptance speech, Han vowed the party will "respond more to the public sentiment."

"Let's try to respond a little more to the people and change according to their standards."

In the short term, Han is tasked with leading the PPP through its agendas at the National Assembly despite its minority status.
In the long term, he is expected to prepare the party for the local election set to take place in June of 2026 where the PPP will aim for more regional leadership posts.

Meanwhile, President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the event and delivered congratulatory words.

He added the future of the conservative party is in the hands of the party members.

The PPP also announced four additional members to its supreme council.
They are Kim Meen-geon, Kim Jae-won, Ihn Yo-han, and Jang Dong-hyeok.
The party also announced Jin Jong-oh as its new youth supreme council member, designated for those under 45.
