"Favorite Colors (feat. Kyle & Luke Tennyson)" by Taylor Bennett
Curated by: Brendan Boland
Genre: #hiphop
Odd Future changed the game. Their combination of indie-esqe productions, emotive lyrics, and cerebral rhyme schemes perfectly suited an audience much more comfortable with genre-defying art forms. “Favorite Colors”, opens with a warbling harpsichord in minor chords clashing against the joyful chirps of song birds; the combination of which frames the song in a reflective, introspective tone.
Taylor Bennet opens with a whispered soliloquy about his hopes of fame, resolving: “I'm talking destiny, demons they wrestle me / fuck any recipe, labels collection me / I'm talking destiny”. His intricate flow and rhyme scheme creates an intimate space -- directly speaking to us, the listener, about the drive of a life known but rarely lived. Kyle and Luke Tennyson provide the backing for Bennet’s tale of self-discovery. Kyle, or Kyle Is Determined, provides his R&B backing, while Tennyson is credited with the song’s dynamic digital jazz. Both the vocals and production are soulful and provocative, matching the intimacy of Bennett’s rhyme. While the songs speak of Bennet’s struggle, the message is one of hope and resilience. Despite the trials of his mind, he states “Even when dinner was ramen, ramen, or ramen / I always knew nothing could top me / I'm good.”
Taylor Bennett has been slowly making a name for himself. With the release of Broad Shoulders, which featured his brother, Chance, and Donnie Trumpet, he has collaborated with such artists as Ty Dolla $ign, Yellow Claw, and King Louie. Like his older brother, Bennett’s form of hip hop tells a series of life lessons, reflections, and stories of vulnerability backed by gospel-inspired production.
