Write 8/5 as a Mixed Number

Показать описание
In order to write 8/5 as a mixed number in simplest form (sometimes people will say "as a whole number" or "mixed fraction") we can follow a few steps.
Note that 8/5 is already simplified (in lowest terms). So we can't reduce or simplify 8/5 any further. But we can write is as a mixed number.
First we can divide the numerator (8 by the denominator (5). 5 goes into 8 a total of 1 times with a remainder of 3.
Second, we take the remainder and put it over the original denominator. This gives us 3/5.
For the mixed number we have the whole number 1 and the fraction (from the remainder) of 3/5.
So 8/5 written as a mixed number is 1 3/5 (one and three-fifths).
To check your work you can now multiply the whole number in mixed fraction by the denominator (1 5) and add this to the numerator (the 3 in the 3/5) you will get 8/5. This is a good way to check that you have the right mixed fraction.
