My old man and his 4 brothers all were there. They stayed for the whole tournament and had a non-stop party. He's passed on now and only one uncle left. But the stories they told me about being one of Ally's Tartan Army were hilarious and a huge part of my growing up.

I have always remembered this game. I recall telling Scotland friends that it would not be easy, just as they had already pencilled in this first game as a win. I said, yes, Brazil and Argentina are good, but the rest of the continent are never too far behind...
You should have seen my Scottish friends faces the next day.. I said nothing, I had already told them before the game..
Perú had a great team in those years...

Scotland and the British press seriously underestimated Peru. Unlike today, when every form guide is on youtube, the lesser known foreign teams flew under most people’s radar. That said, Peru had reached the quarter-finals in 1970 (going out to Brazil) with Cubillas scoring five goals. So Scotland really should have given Peru more respect.
