Dordabis Killer Remanded in Custody
Zorena Jantze
EDWARD Rooi, the 56-year-old man accused of killing his wife and daughter on Saturday in Dordabis, has been kept in custody for further police investigations to continue.
Rooi faces two counts of murder, read with the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act, after he shot his wife, Maggie Rooi (56), and his daughter, Goldie Rooi(30), on Saturday, 5 November, at about 14:30.
In addition to this, he is charged with four counts of attempted murder after he allegedly shot at two officers who arrived at the scene and two civilians, Willem Cloete and Silvia Kotze.
It is alleged that Rooi shot Cloete four times after he suspected him of having an affair with his deceased wife, whilst he shot Kotze once in the thigh as she was also present at the scene.
Rooi, who was irritated by the presence of the media, appeared before Magistrate Atutala Shikalepo.
Public Prosecutor, Edel Upindi, objected to the granting of bail, arguing that police investigations are still at an early stage.
She further argued that the suspect cannot be granted bail at this stage due to the seriousness of the crime and that it would not be in the interest of the public or administration of justice.
Upindi further added that the suspect is suicidal at this point and should be monitored.
The case was postponed to 27 January 2023 and the suspect will be kept at the Windhoek Central Correctional Facility.
