Where does Ludwig go when he jumps?

In phase 1 Ludwig couldn't find his Moonlight, so he sought to become the moon itself.

There's a sort of scratching noise that plays while Ludwig is phased out, which I think is maybe meant to suggest the idea that he's clawing his way across the ceiling, but it's definitely not animated that way. Even as recently as a couple days ago I've seen people insisting that you could see him actually crawling up there, but it's unfortunately just buying into the rumors.
