GETTING CHARGED BY COWS (ALMOST TRAMPLED!!!)

Warning: contains a swear.

I've learned you have to really shout at these types of bullocks/steers otherwise they just charge into you.

I didn't know they were going to be in this field, otherwise I would have avoided it.

But after watching a farmer dealing with animals like these I've learned the best way to stop them hurting you is to shout at them and wave your arms. They still charge towards you, but it keeps them back for a bit. It can be pretty scary.

I had exactly this scenario on a run on the weekend. The young cows in my case were not giving up and i had to hop over a fence. I really struggle to know what to do other than to avoid the field in the first place.

I had a friend who was trampled on by her own heard of cows, she was a farmer for over 30 years, so I would never walk in a field of cows even if they looked friendly. So I think you did the right thing .

It's very easy to watch a video and say "they are just curious – relax, don't run". I am by no means an expert, but I love cows and have been around especially dairy cows a lot. I saw no aggression in these ones, but still, I would have felt uncomfortable around a herd I didn't know, running towards me. Even when cows are not aggressive and don't attack per se, they are huge animals. There are plenty of opportunities to get hurt by friendly cows.

I do find it very sad when curious, playful cows get labeled as "aggressive" and "attacking", but still – be careful! They can for example test you out by a little head butting, toss their heads and hit you, or even try to mount you.

Keeping a safe distance, or a fence between you and the cows is a good idea.

Haha mate. u made me laugh. Those steers were curious and had no intention of running over you.

And after failed attempts with the sea, King Canute tried his hand at farming.

These cows meant business. Usually when you run at cows they run back but these cows stood there ground.

Cat: whaddya mean humans flee when you act a little aggressive?

Cow: but I only wanted headpats.

Cat: Nope. Humans pick me up when I hiss, snuggle me when I put paws to their faces!

Cow: I'm so jealous!

Group-think/herd mentality. When Jojo is having a bad day and tried to pick a fight, the entire herd must back him up.

Many people die each year from cow attacks...

do not kid yourselves people..

these are dangerous animals and you should respect them as such.

In other words.. basically.. leave them the fk alone.

Thought i was a gonna today ..had a frightening experience in a field of about 30 cows. I just about managed to keep them at bay by waving my rucksack and shouting at them as the gate i was heading to was about 150 yards away. I have always been a bit wary of cows but today has made me very wary and thankful to be alive.

Come on man, they are not charging you. They were just going to come near and stare at you. Nothing else. They always do that. Cows are very curious animals.

Just chill and let them walk with you whilst having a nice cowversation! :)

Actually your arm waving and shouting just got them more excited. If you’d have just kept walking they’d have followed, and run to catch up with you, but that’s it.

So cows also tend to act hard when in groups, interesting.

They were not cows, these were young bullocks (young castrated males). You were not being charged, they are just curious. You were not almost trampled, they just followed you, its what they do. If you had stood still and been quiet they would have edged towards you and sniffed and licked you.

I have looked after thousands of cattle and you were quite safe. If they had been cows with calves and you had a dog that would be a quite different matter as that can be an extremely dangerous situation - but the farmer would not have put cows and calves in a field with a footpath where hikers go.
