Life in the Rice Terraces of the Philippines

We are in the lush, green mountains of Barangay Bayyo, Bontoc where the picturesque rice terraces thrive and grow. For generations, the Ibayyo people hold a sacred relationship with the land that they live in, and we were fortunate enough to be invited by a local to witness the rice planting process from start to finish.

Khachiw, Tapuey, and Safeng—these are the treasures that await us on our journey. We’re going on an epic adventure with our host and guide, Tatay Dionisio, who generously shared the beautiful sights and flavors of his home with us on this once in a lifetime experience.

Watch more of our adventures in Bontoc:

One of the best features I've seen in a while. Like I'm watching an internationally produced movie.

Love the ending punctuating the import dependent and export oriented nature of the Philippines. If only we could reverse that.

Another wonderful look at this fascinating place, but please be more consistent with the subtitles. YouTube is a global platform and good subs really help reach those curious about the people and place 👍

Since my siblings and I were born and raised in Baguio, this really resonates with me. Hopefully this will lead to more awareness of how precious this way of life is and allow it to flourish and thrive.

These rice plots are disappearing more and more tbh. and all of them are being transformed into subdivisions. instead of flourishing these farmers and lands, they're poor and not even given proper payment with the efforts to make a living.

I love this! It would be cool to see you guys document the rice terrace farming traditions outside the Cordilleras, like in Tayabas (Quezon) and Antique.

Happy New Year from Illinois! I love this type of documentary! You did a FANTASTIC job--beg, mid and end. My sister farms rice in Neuva Ecija and now I really appreciate what she does even more. Thank you!

2:14 Why did you say the rice terraces were "infamous"? Do you know what infamous means?

Some people asked who made the rice terraces of Mountain Province?
You know, there are people in South China that are called Miao tribes. The Miao tribes live in mountainous areas like the Mountain Province.
Since there are no flat lands in the mountains so they carved their mountains into terraces to plant rice. Same in other parts of China, there are rice terraces in many mountainous areas.
I believed the builders of the Ifugao rice terraces were the same tribe that build the rice terraces of South China, the Miao tribes. Their custom and tradition were almost identical with the tribes of Mountain Province.
Where can you find these Miao tribes of China? They can be found in Yun Nan province.
See and visit the land so you'll appreciate it. Tnx.
