What is GD&T, and Why Do You Need It?

This video is a quick introduction to GD&T (or GT&D). You need to split the idea to two separate concepts: Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Some industries can get away with plus/minus tolerances or even no tolerances. Any part that has a combination of precise and complicated geometry could benefit from definition using geometric tolerancing. ISO-GPS and ASME Y14.5 are great standards to start from.

GeoTol Inc. is a full-service training and consulting firm on geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Please visit our website for information regarding onsite training, online training, virtual training, consulting, books, pocket guides, DVD video, leader PowerPoint and model set packages.

Hi,

Thank you so much for your generous share of knowledge.

I do agree with GT&D acronym, it's brilliantly explained.

Yes, I like this idea. Coming from "geotol", the conversion to "gt" is logical.😊

Three types of tolerances: How many different industrial uses are there for engineering drawings? I’m afraid more than 10…

The old +- tolerances fit very well with an immediate production drawing for the worker, which is essential for the product creating process.

Geometry tolerances can describe what the result of the production should be, but cannot be produced directly only under tool control. This is the mysterium of „gt“, isn‘t it? The solution of ISO GPS is called „duality“ according to ISO 8015.

Where is the explicit functional specification? There will be everytime a relevant difference between the gt-modell and the natur functions „tough“ at A, B and C or „fit“ at the three bores. A secret function might be at the features between „X“ and „Y“. Knowledge of the natural functions would be helpful for the creation of a practicable verification specification.
