M36 JACKSON vs PANTHER | 90mm T33 APBC Armour Piercing Simulation

preview_player
Показать описание
The American M36 was a late-war tank destroyer armed with the 90mm M3 cannon, with its T33 APBC round being capable of knocking out most German armour, including the Panther from around 1000m. The simulation shows what would happen if a Panther was inclined by 5°, increasing the effective angle of the upper plate from 55° to 60°, with the shot being fired from 200m away.

The hardening of the T33 allowed it to perforate angled armour better than most other full calibre AP rounds. The brittle nose shatters on impact, reducing the overturning moment transferred to the tougher base. This allows the base of the round to keep relatively true during penetration.

The upper plate of the Panther varied in thickness and hardness between models, with the one shown being 80mm of 250BHN RHA (assumed to be of good quality).

Just a 5° incline was enough to reduce the penetration range from 1000m to ~300m...

When the shells breaking isn't a bug, but a feature.

It'd be nice to see some simulations of how the 90mm HEATFS rounds used by M47s and M48s in the late '50s early '60s would fare against things like the T-54/55. They're my go-to shells in War Thunder but I don't know much about their real-life effectiveness.

War Thunder: best I can do is non penetration

Very good. We need more WW2 simulations.

I'd love to see some simulations of apfsds against increasingly thick armor plates at say 80 or 85 degrees, at what point does the critical angle actually start to matter and result in a non-penetration, I'd start low at say 5mm and increase in increments of 5 or 10

Yes I am salty about BS ricochets in warthunder and would like to confirm my ideas about apfsds and "overmatch" due to the high aspect ratio/velocity

I wonder how the 90mm T33 would fare against it's upper plate unangled, because even at an angle, it would be enough to hurt the hull crew and possibly the turret crew aswell. I remember reading a document on the 90mm gun that stated the T33 was enough to defeat the Panther's armour at any direction including both front glacis, and with the exception of the Turret mantlet, up to around 2000yrds iirc, I wonder if that's true.

In war thunder it just bounces which is interesting considering its a 90mm aphe good to see the real power of US tanks

Reckon you could do a sim of M1A2 APFSDS vs BMP-2 side? Is no armour the best armour? I'm curious to see how much spalling there is, because I believe uranium sabot spalls a shit ton even on small thickness armour.

Could you simulate the different versions of the 90mm M82 shot from the 90mm M3 or M41 gun? Apparently there was a variation with 200 grams of explosive and reduced velocity (813m/s), a late variation with improved velocity (853 m/s) and reduced explosive (140g) and a final version based off of the T50E1 ammo developed for the T15E2 gun of the T32 heavy tank. T50E1 is apparently similar in dimensions and explosive filler to the earlier ammo but is made of improved steel and had a modified heat treating method, increasing performance.

01:18 You are just flexing there with the capabilities of your neat little program, don't you? 😂
In all seriousness, just AMAZING how accurate the damage model fits real-life results! 😯😎👍

Can you do the frontal hull armor of the M4A3E2 Sherman against a Tiger 1's tank shell? Thanks!

I think it would be pretty interesting to see the effect of a grenade on the weak spot of any tank, hope you take this idea and make it a thing.

in certain game: ricocheted and not even a scratch at any distance and any angle

btw im so surprised with the quality of simulation

It will be interesting to see the simulation of penetration of already penetrated armor, whether it will affect its protection

I've got a test SY could run. SVDS round from a Sherman Firefly vs turret front armor on a American Sherman M4A3E8, because in WoT, the front turret armor on an E8 is impregnable to a round that could penetrate 233mm of German steel.
