Restored J3 Piper Cub First flight and crash.

For the impatient the crash is shortly after the 4 minute mark.

After weeks of cleaning up the old piper cub we finally decide to try it out. Well, my dad got to try it out lol. This was the first flight in about 15 years and was sadly short lived. Clearly the old mans rusty. I Didn't even get to see it land once. It also would have been nice to actually fly it myself also. This fuselage is about 15 years old and has hundreds of flights on it, it had never been crashed until today but It will live to see another day. New maiden flight soon.

Update: thanks for all the comments. Yes plane was obviously tail heavy and a rusty pilot helped bring her on down...... this cub has since been rebuilt and still flies to this day! Rebuild and new maiden video can be found in the rest of my videos.

New maiden here:

Setup:
OS 48 surpass 4 cycle engine (25 years old)
FP-S148 Futaba servos
Spektrum AR6210 receiver
DX7s transmitter

Wearing Flip-Flops to a crash scene... priceless.

Been there, done that, and got a T-Shirt for it. in fact many T-shirts. It happens to the best of us.

That looked like a CG problem to me. I had a Goldberg Cub that was damaged worse than this when I got my thumbs crossed - I hope you rebuild this one!

Put that much time, expense and work and don't know how to fly. Get help! Learn how to fly. Keep it in close, slow it down until you are comfortable and can properly control it.

Dude.  That was such a shame.  The cub is a pleasure to fly when well sorted. I have a 142" 1/3 cub which is a darling. I use it to tow large gliders up.  It did look like a case of too much elevator as it stalled. Others have pointed out the same. Doesn't ease the pain any though. Thank's for sharing.  Trev.

guys why did you dislike this. if you were expecting a restored J3 cub crash, you got it. seriously. just because you thought it was going to be a full scale one, doesnt mean you should dislike it? he didnt clickbait you at all. you can restore RC planes ya know

Sorry for your loss. Crashing is an important part of the hobby though!

I have a 40 years old one (mine is a Carl Goldberg kit) it was glow powered but I made it electric few years ago, great airplane for a slow pilot like me!

classic stall spin. Notice in every turn the plane was skidding nose high, on the final turn there was a strong pitch up creating a stall in an uncoordinated condition and the plane entered a spin. aerodynamics 101...

Wow - the vert. stab. wasn't damaged at all!

Definitely a textbook spin entry. I teach actual spins in aviation. Had it been a little higher some opposite rudder of the roll would have saved it. Was a great looking model.

I also have a Piper over 6 foot wingspan. And those are hard to stall. To me it looked like glitches in your radio system. Or maybe old battery. Sorry for your loss. Did the engine survive at least?

All the start-up and preflight checking looked just right. I think his socks weren't pulled up tight enough.

Tail heavy if the plane cannot glide properly, you need to adjust or trim elevator. It will little help.

Looked tail heavy and then came the stall...I have Piper Cub and it will do same thing if I stall it with full really great flat spins...Just need plenty of altitude for recovery...if you don't chop the throttle, you will flat spin it to the ground.

My Carl Goldberg Anniversary Edition Cub when stalled would simply put the nose down straight ahead. I agree the CG must have been off. It looks rebuildable to me but I guess that depends on each persons abilities to build. Good luck in future flights!

Looks like you had problems with pitch control the whole flight. Too much elevator travel or not enough expo maybe.  Too bad though. Build, fly, crash, rebuild. That's the hobby.

Lost control because it stalled and couldn't recover from it. Maybe a little tail heavy. Always go nose heavy and find the sweet spot on subsequent flights.

So obviously tail heavy. It was porpoising all over the place. And the pilot had totally uncoordinated turns. Great plane, horrible flyer.
