A Cheap Bench Vise

I found this cheap irwin bench vise for $20! A quick video showing how to install it. I used 5/4 Cherry because I had it on hand but I'll probably replace the liners with 3/4 inch material

Good job Will. I have a Wilton 176 that is almost the same in dimensions. Lately there have been a number of videos making smaller benches 1' x 2' with this type of vise at the end. This then clamps onto bigger benches. For us taller wood workers, this is a great remedy for back pain. I am upgrading my main bench, cutting loose my Wilton and will soon make just such a mini bench. Your Irwin actually looks a little better for my need. Thanks for your input.

I picked this vise up at Lowe's today up after seeing this. I've got it mounted temporarily until i get the scrap wood for the jaws.

As with your other videos, great presentation.

That's a very practical vise. If you do end up replacing the wood liners, consider using taller pieces with relief for the guides/screw. The advantage is that you'll have more surface area on either side, which will help for vertically mounted pieces such as you showed at the end of the video.

Simple pipe clamp vice at the end of your assembly table would be quite nice. Have one on mine and it is amazing

Well done.  Nice, tight, well edited video.  It is a delight to view a quick, concise, how-to video.  I installed one of these IRWIN $20 bench vises on my Harbor Freight workbench. I added 14" long, 7/8" thick maple on the jaws to protect the woodworking project.  $20 is a very reasonable price.Bill

I’m not sure what it would cost to ship but I have an old Wilton vice that I took off an old bench when my father died. Not sure if it’s what your looking for but your welcome to it. Let me know if your interested. Thanks. Brock

Is there a reason you didn't mount from behind and use the edge board of the bench as the back jaw and reduce the front profile?

A necessary tool. I use mine 60-80% of the time I am in the shop! Great addition!

Seems like a great little vise. Also, your editing skills make for enjoyable videos. Im a big fan of your channel. In the future if you find this vise is not practical for certain tasks, it would be awesome to see your take on a moxon vise build.

Very cool and excellent production as always!

Nice & concise. But why make the wooden faces so thick? That'll reduce the holding capacity by about an inch (my vintage vice came fitted with wooden blocks of about half that thickness when I got, more than 10 years ago and it's holding up just fine).

really nice. I should do the same when I get a proper bench that is.

Hey brother. Do you think I could use two of those irwin vises with one piece of wood attached to both jaws to use as a twin screw vise....?

there is a place in nashville called general industrial that is going out of business, they have been selling and auctioning off Wilson vises by the pallet full. Guess they had a couple hundred. give them a call and strike up a deal
