Ok, just back from a 14 night cruise to Scandinavian so i have to disagree with several of your comments.
We found the food on Britannia to be superb, the Horizon buffet admittedly does get busy but the selection of breakfasts was amazing, tasty and hot, and when we used the buffet on sea days, the variety of food on offer was extensive, various curries all hot, some lovely old fashioned english puddings also reminded me of the traditional puddings i had as a child
If you are on Freedom dining (and if not, why not..?) you can join the virtual queue for your desired restaurant through the P & O app, and quite often we would be number 40 in the queue and then suddenly our table was ready..! Not sure about your comment of just turning up to book, we heard several people arriving expecting to be seated only to be told it was a half hour wait, use the app..!The Meridian and Peninsular have a set menu in the evening at no extra cost.. If, like us, you fancied something off the menu, the cost was tiny in comparison to the cost of the cruise. We ate at The Beach House on two occasions (but you have to book) and i had a huge sizzling fillet steak on a lava rock (that you sliced and cooked to your own liking) prawns and carrots for an additional £9..!! My wife had lobster tail and a variety of seafood on two skewers for an extra £9.50... Youre losin money by not upgrading..!!! :)
We will definitely be booking again and have just looked at the price for next year and it is up by £600
We also considered splashing out and a year in advance booking a balcony cabin but needn't have bothered because they are all booked already

We sailing on britania in june, we went on the iona last year, great time but we are clueless when it comes to technology so we couldnt book in any nice restaurant, we only really had a proper meal when in port when we would go and find a good eating place on land, we still had a lovely time which is why we decided to try britania, is there people on board who would help us to book a table so that we can eat on the ship, we did have room service a couple of times which was fine, but because we have no idea how to use technology i feel we are missing out 😊

The Horizon buffet would not be my choice for dinner but luncheon is perfectly ok for a jacket spud, salad and sandwiches. Maybe reflecting Solo Travel 1974's comment about hot main dishes.

Which would you recommend club dining or freedom dining?

We have sailed Britannia a few times, and for some reason they seem to cater for vegan/gluten free requirements on all, or most deserts, sweets etc, which are best tasteless and strange in texture. We had food in Sindhu, which was not up to standard, salty, and left under a heat lamp to dry out. The people on the next table suffered the same. So the last hope was dessert, bread and butter pudding with cardamom and ginger custard. Sound delicious right? Wrong. You guessed it, vegan/gluten free. It was a horrible wet, tasteless mush, and the 'custard was this bland, yellowish thin liquid that made the dish into gooey disaster. I asked for a full refund, which I had to get from reception. This trend also applies to the main dining rooms and Horizon buffet. I saw 'Blueberry cheesecake' on the gala night menu, so I thought I'd enjoy that. Then I noticed, too late, the V/GF tag beside it. How sad. It arrived, and it wobbled like jelly, and cheesecake doesn't wobble. It was awful, tasteless, dreadful. And finally, the 'Cream Teas' in The Retreat? Yep, same. Scones crumble to bits if you try to cut them, its like they're made out of dried paper pulp and raisins, the 'cream' isn't, and the 'chocolate cake' is not any better. There, I've said it. It has to be pointed out because they are doing this to save money. V/GF stuff doesn't use dairy etc so keeps for ages. SO next time you're on a P&O cruise remember this and check out what I have mentioned here. Its true I'm afraid. Happy sailing.
