Thomas Aquinas was an Italian Dominican friar, philosopher, Catholic priest, and Doctor of the Church. Being the greatest of the Scholastic philosophers Thomas Aquinas was an immensely influential philosopher and a theologian. Thomas Aquinas produced a comprehensive synthesis of Christian theology and Aristotelian philosophy that influenced Roman Catholic doctrine for centuries and was adopted as the official philosophy of the church. Thomas Aquinas embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle and attempted to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with the principles of Christianity. Aquinas placed charity in the context of the other Christian virtues and specified its role as “the foundation or root”. Thomas Aquinas says "Charity is a virtue which, when our affections are perfectly ordered, unites us to God, for by it we love him. Thomas Aquinas is known as the Angelic Doctor of the church or the Universal Teacher. In modern times, under papal directives, the study of his works form the core of the required programme of study for those seeking ordination as priests or deacons, as well as for those in religious formation and for other students of the sacred disciplines.
Thomas Aquinas’s best-known works are the Disputed Questions on Truth, the Summa contra Gentiles and the unfinished but immensely influential Summa Theologica. Aquinas had a mystical experience while celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273. At this point, Thomas Aquinas set aside his Summa Theologica. When asked why he had stopped writing, Aquinas replied, "I cannot go on …. All that I have written seems to me like straws, compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me." Aquinas is distinguished for his Eucharistic hymns, which form a part of the church's liturgy.
Thomas Aquinas puts forward five ways to prove the existence of God.
The First Way: God, the Prime Mover. This is the existence of motion. Which means every moving thing needs a mover.
The Second Way: God is the First Cause, which means God is the prime mover.
The Third Way: God, the Necessary Being, which means, to account for all existence, there must be a Necessary Being, this necessary being is God.
The Fourth Way: God, the Absolute Being in all gradations of beings.
The Fifth Way: God, the Grand Designer.
The fifth way argues that the behaviour of things in the world implies a Grand Designer or architect, this architect is God.
