I used a microsd card holder with a 128 gb spare card I had. It worked and saved me the cost of a key drive. It's also a lot smaller and fits more neatly on the cable.
However, the majority of apps won't run from the usb memory. They have to be on the firestick, even some games. So 128gb is hardly likely to get used let alone a Tb.
