Had all types of small birds in my teens. My budgies learned to speak sentences.
Don't get any animal if u can't/won't spend time with them.

Many years ago, my husband actually found a peach-faced lovebird in the parking lot where I worked. We tried (without success) to find its owner, and there were pet stores of any kind within 50 miles where we could get another - no shelters, nothing. So, we bought a slew of mirrors that we put all over the cage and throughout the house. Lucky for us, my husband had an old, hand-held dictating machine with a small cassette inside. Over the next couple of days, he would record the bird singing. Every day after that, he would play the recording from different places around the house, and our little Petey would get so excited thinking there was another bird like him somewhere in the house! We were able to keep him pretty happy for quite a while. Unfortunately, after about 2 years, he got sick and by the time we got him to an emergency vet, he was gone. I'll always treasure the time we had with him. What an awesome and beautiful creature he was.

I used to be a Merchant Mariner on a salvage ship. I was Chief Mate & we had 2 English guys onboard for one job. They were reps from the Company we were doing a job for. I got to be good friends with them & I mentioned once that I wished I had a parrot thatd sit on my shoulder. I was kinda just kidding. Well, next time we were in port(& it was Port Canaveral in Florida that we'd go into. Way into the inner harbor near the Disney cruise ships). It was a weather sensitive job we were doing so we were in there a lot. We'd go out to Cocoa Beach and one night, Mitch 1 of the English guys came back with a cage and a peach faced love bird in it &; gave it to me! My captain had no problem with it and I named her Sassy. She DID sit right on my shoulder and when I eas on watch would jump onto the throttle sticks. After awhile I would even bring her out on Deck. I knew she'd dtick with me & she always did. If someone got too pushy trying to get her to step up on their hand, she'd go behind my neck and try to hide in my hair 😆. She came to my stateroom where her cage was & jave run of yhe place. I flew back and forth with her. She lived to be 17. It broke my heart. I still miss her. She eas my little sidekick. They're amazing. ❤

I had no idea they were actually a bird with a personality. I thought they were like other small birds where they’re mindless, messy noise boxes that are more decorative than pet, but they definitely don’t seem to be.

I think they’re a type of bird that needs interaction. You can’t just throw it in a cage, feed and water it, and leave it. That’s what a lot of people tend to do when they first get a bird, and my cousins did it to theirs. The bird essentially turns wild, it gets aggressive, stresses out, and is miserable. I’d love to have a bird, but I’d worry that I’m just seeing the fun side but not really understanding the effort you need to put in.

Getting two birds is a must for nearly any species, nut just lovebirds. My goobers are the same.

You gotta mention the “hand fed” element of an affectionate lovebird.

love birds are just that- lovey. if you don't get a pair (any configuration, really, my grandma has two mated males), their human is who they will view as "mate" and you will need to spend considerably more time with them than if they had a companion.
