Shoutout to channel member Nick who recently asked this (as many students do). The backbeat is IMO probably the most significant uniting feature in all Western contemporary music!

Dave's drumming on VS is some of the best rock drumming ever recorded. The accent notes and fills on Daughter to the driving rhythmic beat on WMA are simply perfect. 30 years later, that album still holds up to anything else ever released.

I cannot believe this duration deception! And from somebody who is so good at keeping time!!

He said that he would explain the concept to us in one minute, and then he _immediately_ tricked me by holding my attention for TWO minutes instead.

yo ive recently dug into the history of gospel and found out lots of interesting stuff there including that this genre probably born all of the modern music (spirituals - blues and gospel - jazz - rock, pop, metal, hip-hop etc.) And also there is clapping tradition on off beats in gospel so...

do you think that this backbeat thing is probably a natural descendant of gospel clapping tradition?

As a percussionist who grew up on asymmetric grips the backbeat can be a little awkward, particularly in power situations like metal rock. If I could develop a good roll in that format, I might switch to symmetric grips like Mike does, but it's probably too late. IMO it's rather hard to do good jazz drumming with symmetric grips - look at the old Dave Brubeck vidoes.

As a guitarist, I only understood backbeat as when the drummer plays just before the instruments. The opposite is someone like Stewart Copeland(the Police) who plays ahead (faster) than other members of the band. Please clarify?

Can you offer a tutorial on "Stricken" by Disturbed. I live stream playing the drums topless.

So, how would you teach the "Motown" beats?
