Actually, in my opinion, Adora loved Catra at the whole time, but you have to remember, Adora didn't know what a party or aunt mean, Catra didn't know what "birthday" means.
I am pretty sure that they always had really close relationship, but they could never put it into words or know what "love" is. It can explain why Catra goes crazy after Adora leaving her. She always had Catra and never tought that she could lose her, she always was on Catras side and always tried to protect her ( since they were children ) and tried her best to make the best of Catra, and Catra was enjoying that. Catra loved the fact that she is with Adora and not the fact that she is always protected, but when Adora left her with all her feelings, Catra breaks, because she realizes that Adora always helped her and always was with her, but she does not know what love is, and starts to think that Adora only wanted power and Shadow Weavers respect, which she never got.
After that she tries to hate Adora, thats why she is really obsessed to show her how much she doesn't need her to be the person who rules the universe, but i think theres a kind of " notice me and come back " in all of her actions.
And when Double Trouble tells her the Tea she just sitting there and realized that she made all the wrong choices and then when she is on the ship she starts thinking about Adora, you can notice that she talks about her more than usual and i guess the moment when she finally realized that she is romantically interested, when asks Adora to take her home.
Adora realizes that Catra is not a bad guy anymore, she is just the Catra she known since they were kids and she is really terrified when Catra falls down, actually she is the most terrified here at the whole show.
It's kind of like Catra accepts that she can't hate her and knows that she will protect her, you can see the trust in her eyes at this moment. After that Catra tries to keep up her "evil" attitude bc she's scared, but the finally she let Adora see the real her.

I have come to the conclusion that this isn’t the moment Adora FALLS in love with Catra, neither is it the moment she REALIZES she’s in love with Catra but rather it’s the moment she ALLOWS herself to finally BE in love with Catra and actually truly feel those feelings (just before that moment is ripped away from her and she becomes She-Ra again)

i think she fell in love with catra way before this moment. i think she finally REALIZED what she felt was love, not that she FELL in love here, does that make sense? she was emotional and lost at certain points in the episode and didn't know how to explain what she was feeling. otherwise, this made me cry because it was so touching.

I always interpreted this scene as the show’s subtle confirmation that Adora has been in love with Catra the entire time and only now has she allowed it to show (the way she gasps and then sinks into the touch gave me the feeling it was something she always secretly longed for from Catra and was finally receiving, like if your crush suddenly came up to you and held you like that).
I never saw it as Adora realizing anything, I saw it as the show finally confirming she had been in love with Catra by showing us a small little intimate moment with Adora where she is completely alone with “Catra”, and reacts to a romantic gesture that Catra has never done, allowing herself to open up and reveal her feelings that otherwise were kept hidden out of fear Catra didn’t reciprocate, a feeling that she didn’t want to make Catra uncomfortable and also just responsibility, which is why we had never seen Adora react overtly romantic with Catra in the show until this moment where “Catra” gives Adora’s feelings validation, sort of inviting Adora to let them finally.
It would make sense because Adora is definitely the type of person who would be hopelessly in love with somebody but never show it out of sheer politeness because she doesn’t want to make them uncomfortable or lose them as a friend, and so she would stay content with being friends until she got confirmation that she was allowed to be in love with them sort of like “I don’t want to burden them with my feelings so I’ll just keep quite unless I’m proven otherwise” sort of thing. It’s interesting reading these comments seeing everyone took it as Adora realizing she loved Catra, to me it was the show confirming that Adora was fully aware of her love for her the entire time. Anyways, I never considered this take on it, but I like this too!
