Waterfall vs. Agile (Project Methodologies)

Business analysts should understand the difference between the two main methodologies used to deliver software to the customer. The methodology affects everything that business analysts do, from requirements planning, to document structure and stakeholder analysis.

So if the BA's don't do a whole lot of documentation, how do they do their work? Do they engage in requirement gathering/elicitation? Is that the Product Manager who is their only stakeholder, he/she will be eliciting requirements from? How do the document these requirements? I mean if I am a BA, I have to jot down some notes and write the requirements some where. Where are these requirements written? In a Backlog?

You also did not talk about if BA role is changed to "Product Owner" in agile. Now we have Product Manager role too, where does that fit in agile? I worked for a company which is was 100% agile, with small projectized teams. I was a QA in one such team. I had 1 back-end developer, 1 database developer, 1 front-end developer, I also had 1 Product Owner. I remember the Product Owner was my goto person to ask questions for clarification. She was, in my opinion, a representative of customers. I think she was doing the role of a BA as she was responsible for prioritizing the backlog. I also had 1 Scrum Master on my team (who was also serving as a Scrum Master for other teams). This product owner was and the scrum master was in every sprint meetings. She would do something in the backlog (a repository). Some of her stories were well-defined and others (for the future) were incomplete. That was long time back.

I am sure now things are done differently. Looks like Product Owner has been replaced by Product Manager (at least the title). What is vague for me is what role does the BA play here? Is he/she part of the scrum team? or works outside of the scrum team in the background with only the product managers and other stake holders and help them create, elaborate, prioritize backlogs?
