Monster Hunter Wilds is coming soon! But in the meantime I'd like to talk about a monster hunter game that's often overlooked in favor of monster hunter world and monster hunter rise. That game is Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. And it just might be the best Monster Hunter game...

The best part of GU is seeing monsters jump into the stratosphere to move to another zone.

That thumbnail really be like, "Here y'all go again pitting two bad bitches against each other for no reason."

13:58 that moment you get hit by plesioth so hard you just teleport to camp

Also you didn't cover the most goofy and fun "weapon" in the game and that is the prowler playing as the cat to support and do some weird crazy attacks especially online is so much fun, not only that but prowler has SO MUCH customization its almost as much as the weapons themselves making it a weapon on its own

GU is the peak of the classic, the culmination of gen 1 through gen 4, you cannot say that classic is better than the modern one and vice versa, they are just different, the classics ends with generations ultimate, and they go out with a bang, the name itself "Generations Ultimate" is pretty fitting tbh
Gen 5 and onward is the new era of Monster Hunter the natural evolution of the game i always think to myself that gen 5 onward is the spiritual successor to the classic era, if there's ever gonna be another new era of monster hunter in the future, i hope that the modern games can also give us a final game like GU

One of the other great lessons Great Maccao teaches is about "danger zones" or, zones around the monster you want to avoid being in because they can attack you faster than you can react and avoid. With Maccao, it's those little tiny kicks. They won't kill you, just be annoying enough for you to realize "shoot, I should stop being right in front of this guy".

Another lesson is something that leads right into Valstrax, and that is stance changing. Maccao on its tail and on its feet has access to different attacks, and you can adjust your play style based on that. Similarly, Valstrax does different attacks based on whether its engines are faced forwards or backwards, and you can similarly approach him differently based on which stance he is in.

GU was the reason I bought a Nintendo switch and was what got me into the franchise I love GU

If the title has a "U" in it, it's a good Monster Hunter game. See: MHFU, MH3U, MH4U, MHGU.

I think Ahtal Ka can perfectly be summed like this. Style AND Substance. It's an absolute spectacle of a battle that's actually fantastic to play through.
Without Iceborne, I honestly feel Base World suffered greatly from Style over Substance. 2 of the biggest fights in the game, Zorah Magdaros and Xenojiiva are just overgrown punching bags that are nice to look at.

SO glad someone finally decided to talk about how the limitations loading zones actually enhance the atmosphere of classic monhun maps. I love GU so, so much.

It absolutely doesn't require loading screens to get that perception of scale. Just a simple zoom-out fade-out as the character starts walking a path... then cinematically coming back in. Maybe a couple times with an intermediate zone looking down. Just like how thick vines / fast travel works in World, there's a cinematic entrance to the zone via wingdrake before you regain control. Also allows much more interesting terrain and set pieces when not everything needs to be walkable.

That bit at the first part about Valstrax's nest height could be possible in rise, maybe through like a 20 second long massive great wire-bug pull, which would totally be badass.

I am super happy that you mentioned how you felt about the map design and world building in the old games. I feel the same way for exactly the same reasons. It is the reason i fell I love with the monster hunter games. The world that is not fully shown but hinted at, for your to imagine.

There's even a hidden "weapon+style combo rolled into one" that's only in MHGU, the playable Palico.

4U is the best one imo, very cold take I know, but it’s just the most well rounded game overall. Didn’t experiment or introduce any crazy new concepts, just doubled down on what worked and greatly succeeded at it. I generally prefer GU for its combat, monster roster and map selection but it probably has the worst grind loops in the series. G-rank hypers don’t feel playtested. I feel like MHWI could have easily been the best if it had just streamlined less mechanics, avoided the live-service approach to prevent monster and weapon power creep and patch out the clutch claw/claggers entirely.

07:55 great maccao has better mechanics but great jaggi's aura is unmatched

At 4:55 when you said that's not why you play Monster Hunter when it comes to the unique imaginative zones, I personally would say that THAT is half the reason why I play Monster Hunter, because part of hunting is to step into the world of that monster, where it lives, so the way the maps are designed add to the personality of the monster and the surrounding habitats it inhabits. I've always loved the various set pieces that the maps of the old games provided. World and Rise have some good areas, but overall they don't come close to the classics.

Another thing not mentioned that makes Maccao the best starting monster is that it teaches the player about sharpness the best. Even after an upgrade or two, you are very likely to dip into orange (or even red if you absolutely refuse to sharpen), and this even happens in the tutorial arena fights. Maccao also has parts that will bounce if you're at orange, something other starter monsters don't really do.
