Try the ladder rungs with bare feet. I find round ladder rungs really uncomfortable especially with full body weight.

What about a hand held on the cabin. If the waters rough you will need it to pull yourself up.

the ladder looks not enough long. will be difficult to lift yourself out of the water. Probably, another step on the ropes for foot support would be helpful, or just a loop of rope.

From here, it looks like you could have cut two small slots in the rub rail instead of removing the entire section.
