Here is another remastered version of a recording made during a performance of Bach's 'Mass in B Minor' at the Royal Albert Hall on 24 April 1926. We hear the Royal Choral Society (850 voices) accompanied by the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra conducted by Dr Edward Bairstow, with R. Arnold Greir at the 4 manual 1871 Willis organ (rebuilt by Harrison and Harrison in 1924) which, at the time it was built, was the largest in the world.

I transferred this recording from HMV D 1114. The disc is very gritty indeed, but I think this remastered version is clearer than the initial version I uploaded some considerable time ago.

Bach❤bit by in this remarkable rendition by a British company of yes, listening with ears of deep affection because there is a real great tradition to perform spiritual works specially from the baroque period for this early in the morning

You have got rid of the surface noise, but it now sounds rather distant. This was just 38 years after the Crystal Palace cylinders, the first ever recording of a live musical event; and in another 38 years (1964) we had stereo. 38 years after that (2002) everything was digital. We have come a long way in 135 years!

The sense of the music is so aptly brought out. This is my favourite side from the selections you have transferred.

Thou that takes away the sins of the World ...

And they mean it, like Bach meant it. Even if someone is not remotely religious, it would be hard to avoid being involved by such music making. The music, the performance and the text. So beautiful that it has brought tears to my eyes in this mad time.

So many thanks from George
