Beautiful story, and beautifully narrated! The music at the beginning was just brief. No distraction there.

One has to be able to read and understand the Russian language and these translations are fantastic, . It behooves you to understand the words

This reminds me of an event that occurred around the 60's in America. A town was tormented by a bully for many years. Some people who mustered the courage to take the bully to the authorities and testify in court wound up threatened by him or injured. One day the town killed the bully in broad daylight in front of many witnesses and no one in the town stepped forth to tell what happened. It became a mystery as to what happened to the bully. Listening to Tolstoy's story, I feel very sad because the tormented townspeople took matters into their hands and they prevented God to do justice on their tormentor. It is understandable they had reached a breaking point. However the story says, "The seeds of still greater wickedness have been planted in you..." I wonder what became of the poor townspeople. 😕

You had to have left after 25 seconds because the background music was an intro and only lasted 30 seconds. Sorry you missed this one… as it was a lovely story!

Tolstoy did not like serfdom at all!!!! it was really slavery! he was also a vegetarian, very religious, and was good to people. he left everything to his daughter, Sasha, his youngest. She sold the Tolstoy estate and gave it to the serfs on their land. 🌷🌱

Five ads in a 22 minute story is waaay too many ads. The story itself (as all Tolstoys shorts a are) is wonderful and packs a lot into those few minutes.
I listen to short stories as I am unwinding for sleep so the ads really ruined it for me. There are other channels that have no ads so I will stick to those going forward.

Buddhist stories have a similar tone, they are simple, but not stupid, rather full of wisdom 🙏🏻💖

The serfs got lucky! When you’re working for a tyrant, they don’t always die.

I would differentiate between murder and killing.
Two wrongs don't make a right and probably is not good enough when directing punishment.
Sometimes, religious prescriptions are there as extra prevention of occasional deeds.

So you think Tolstoy wrote this because he was a religious fool trying to tell peasants to chill and wait for God to save them? I think he made it very clear that SOME landlords were evil and abusive, but even if justified it would be very dangerous for the peasants to rebel . He knew that it would be censored unless the theme suggested that prayer, piety, and subservience would result in divine justice. So he deliberately wrote in BS about magic candles, religious songs, and people having unlikely fits of conscious . Block out the BS an you have a manifesto for revolution. By leaving it in the story had a chance to be published. Anyhow that is how i see it.
A magic candle on an ox plow! Not ment to be believed . Tall tales need to be tall enough or the storyteller will be mistaken for a lier.

The background music is so distracting, I left after a minute.

'great' writers like tolstoy failed the russian people with stories like this one, intellectually about the level of a ten year old and spiritually reinforcing the peasant's status quo barren lifestyle
