Welcome to The Horse’s Advocate Podcast episode 17: “ Does Soybean Meal Help Horses? Equine Nutrition Questions Answered.” Recorded on July 7, 2021

Whether soybean meal is OK to feed horses is often asked on the FB group (The Horse's Advocate) and by my dentistry clients. If all seeds cause gut inflammation (lectins, starch) in horses and the core belief of this group is to go back to feeding horses the way they ate for millions of years, how then is providing soybean meal (SBM) a good choice for horses?

This podcast discusses how and why the horse's body loses the essential amino acids daily and the reasons for supplementing using SBM. It also outlines what shows on the horse when chronically deficient in high-quality protein (the protein that supplies all ten essential amino acids). More critical is discussing how SBM has a long safety history and why this is so.

Great discussion. Re fish: when I was a kid my Shetland pony ate an entire 8" long trout that my cousin foolishly offered to him. One gulp. He also ate a spoiled tuna fish casserole my aunt put out for the dogs. Shetlands have learned to survive on anything, I guess🤪

Hi,
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I have a few questions about soya flour. Do you know how this flour is produced? Presumably it is produced in the process of making soya oil? Is there any chemical contamination of the flour in this process? Do you know of any cases of horses fed this flour having inflammatory problems?Would it not perhaps be better to prepare the soya flour yourself or to feed the horses home-made soya milk?

Thank you for your reply...

Excellent thankyou. Great discussion. Very holistic and worth sharing with others. I feed my stallions, pregnant / lactating mares and growing young horses soybean meal. It was good to hear an explanation. We also have a great lupin variety in Australia that is high in protein, (I believe low in lectins because it is a legume) and very palatable. It comes in many forms but I feed it cracked and soaked and the hulls as part of a high fibre additive.

I have been searching online for suitable soybean meal to feed my horses, but have not found one yet. Can someone share where you're buying SBM? I'm located in southern Arizona, USA.

Can we not just add the amino acids with supplements? The gut supplements I use for my horses have amino acids in it.
