The author suffered with depression himself and unfortunately killed himself after he published the book

The author of this book spent five days in an adult psychiatric hospital, and then a week after he was released he wrote the book in less than a month. Ned Vizzini ended his life at age thirty-two in 2013. His words have inspired many, including myself. He was big on mental health awareness, using humor to get rid of stigma, and encouraging people to get help.

I saw this in theaters with a friend who recently killed herself.
This was our movie, and always will be.
I only wish that I stayed closer with her after high school. She was a kind person, who didn't deserve any of the hardships in her life.

Rest in peace Sara, you will be missed by so many.

"I found myself jealous of the people who wrote the books. They were dead and they were still taking up my time. Who did they think they were?"
RIP Ned

This movie made me feel more in about 2 hours than I had in the past couple of weeks. I hadn't slept, moved, or cried in months (I say months because I truly do not remember the last time I've done these things). The main lead is very much me. I have a somewhat loving family, but my dad works more than he talks to me, and my mom doesn't really believe anything is wrong with me mentally, but I know that they still love me, I have a roof over my head, I have loving friends, but there's still this part of me that makes me feel like I'm unable to feel happiness, or that I'm undeserving of happiness. Thank you to this movie for letting me see someone like me that on the outside looks fine but on the inside truly needs help.

If only mental hospital relationships went that well. My romantic life would've been a lot less painful.

This book (and movie retrospectively) sincerely helped me cope with depression when i was in school a few years ago. Knowing what what the author went through and how everything ended up... It was a huge blow. But I can carry on through everything even today thinking back to this story, the people in it. The world is so much bigger, and so much kinder than you might be willing to believe. If you think there's no-one else, I'm rooting for you

Ned Vizzini, the author of the book died exactly how Craig Gilner planned to commit suicide :(

I don't want to trigger anyone, it's just my opinion: I just finished the book 5 minutes ago and it was so sad knowing about Ned Vizzini. And I saw that they made a movie about it and decided to check the trailer. That book was so intense and made me feel every feeling of each word written. I expected this trailer to do the same. Instead it's just another teen movie.
Yes the trailer is really good if you want that teen movie experience but it doesn't feel as good, as sad as it's supposed to be. This book was about depression, a very sensitive topic and this is idk but they made it look so easy. I don't even know how to say it in words. I am just dissapointed. I really hope someday people will make movies with the same feelings and messages as the books.

the movie is good until you read the book. the film is good enough not to ruin the book but still... if you read the book first, the movie is crap next to it.

the movie is pretty good, but the book is incredible. the book did change me, the way Craig decided to keep on living. it gave me hope.

So, moral of the story:
If you've read the book - the movie's bad....if you haven't read the book - 'the movie's great!

The day this movie was on TV my parents just went to talk with my psychologists because i need medication and she wanted to talk about it with them. This was the perfect movie to make us feel like we will still have each other even with my depression, and it will get better. I wanted to see this movie for a while, but seems like the universe prepared me to see it it with them.

The truth is when you are in these hospitals, you feel safe and acknowledged. As if the world has finally stopped to greet you and listen to you. You meet new people and you have this sense of belonging. But when you leave these hospitals, everything goes back to how it was before you got admitted because the people you met along the way never stick around and the world is still moving without you.

... I was expecting some "Hey buddy wanna play some cards!?" In the trailer.

this pissed me off cuz in the book she had very noticeable cuts on her cheeks and she never looked very nice and thus just ruins that image, not a single cut or scar, wtf

First watched this ten years ago when I was 16. Cannot stress how much it helped me grow up as a man.

I spent a week in a psych ward in a hospital. My last night my parents helpt me throw a pizza party. Weird experience. Ambien is a crazy pill. Being around the type of people i was around made me feel less crazy. I will never forget my experience and the people. I kinda want to go back and help in some way.
