Phuket Travel Guide island hopping 2018
Phuket is surrounded by many beautiful islands and each one of them has something different to offer. Only minutes away from Phuket there are sandy beaches, secluded coves, rare birds and fauna with beautiful weather thrown in for free. Island hopping by speedboat is a way of taking all this beauty in.

At first glance, Phuket may seem like a perfect island on its own, boasting beautiful beaches and exciting nightlife. However, it’s strategic location holds the key to unlocking some of the most amazing islands that Thailand has to offer.

Phuket is known for its beautiful beach, lively night markets or exciting parties at Bangla Road. However, if you are bored of the typical Phuket holiday, Phuket also has some neighbouring islands that you can visit for a change of scenery. Each island has its own charm and beauty that you have to discover, and here are some of the beautiful islands you can hop around from Phuket.

Top Phuket Islands

1 Koh Phi Phi
Like something out of a fairy tale, the Phi Phi Islands are the very essence of exotic beauty: limestone karsts with thick jungle and stunning coves of golden sand. It must be said that Phi Phi Don, the only inhabited island, has seen rampant development in recent years, which does slightly mar the escapist element of the island. However, it also means that there’s more tourist facilities such as restaurants, beach bars and shops. Nightlife on Koh Phi Phi is especially noticeable during the full moon parties, which are particularly popular with the backpacker crowd. Scuba diving around Koh Phi Phi is very popular too, as is a trip to Koh Phi Phi Leh, the famous setting for The Beach, which propelled the island to fame.

2 Similan Islands

Belonging to the eponymous Marine National Park, the Similans are a group of nine islands located 84km northwest of Phuket. Totally undeveloped, they offer their visitors an unspoiled remote territory in the same state as it used to be thousands of years ago. Ranked among the 10 best dive sites in the world, the Similans can be visited on day trips as well as short stopovers. The rangers’ camp features accommodation in tents and small bungalows that allow visitors to fully enjoy the natural beauty of the islands. With white powder sand beaches, lush vegetation, crystal waters, and only the sound being the wind through the branches, the Similans offer the ultimate place to get away from it all.

3 Racha Islands
Also known as Raya, the Racha Islands are two islets situated some 20km south of Phuket. Racha Yai and Racha Noi are especially famous for their top-notch diving and snorkelling sites, as well as for their ‘full of fish’ surrounding waters. Racha Yai is the only island of the two featuring accommodation options and a small local population of Muslim fishermen and farmers. Relatively busy during daytime with the passage of day-trippers, it regains its tranquillity after 16:00, and offers its guests laid-back evenings spent in the few bars and restaurants available, or stargazing on the beach.

4 Koh Khai Islands
Khai Islands – Koh Khai Nok and Koh Khai Nai – are two tiny islets situated to the east of Phuket, only a 20-minute ride by speedboat. The largest of them, Koh Khai Nok, is particularly busy in high season as it offers a pleasant getaway from Phuket for those who want to enjoy sunbathing and snorkelling without the hassle of a long trip at sea. Both islands are uninhabited, and Khai Nok is the only one which can be visited. Featuring all the infrastructures necessary to spend a comfortable day on the beach – restaurants, bars, sun-loungers and umbrellas – the highlight of Koh Khai Nok is the multitude of tropical fish roaming around the shore, giving visitors the great experience of swimming in a natural aquarium.

5 Coral Island
Coral Island (Koh Hae in Thai) is a small island lying five kilometres off Phuket’s southeastern coast. The short commuting time – 15 minutes by speedboat – from Phuket, makes this island a very popular day trip destination. It features only two beaches named Long and Banana, both of them facing north and offering great diving and snorkelling opportunities. There is only one hotel - Coral Island Resort - and a few bars and restaurants on the island that, in a similar way as Racha Island, is buzzing with day-trippers until mid-afternoon before to regains its peacefulness at night. Coral Island certainly has all the assets of a tropical dream destination near Phuket.
