INVICTUS. YES. What a great poem. Morgan Freeman is already a legend, but the fact that he memorized this amazing poem makes him even more legendary.

Fun Fact: this poem was named Invictus posthumously. originally it belonged to a collection of poems called Echoes of Life and death. it was written in 1876 by 26 yr old poet who had lost one leg to TB of the bone at 12 yrs old. He wrote this after almost losing the other leg. Henley was a good friend to Robert Louis Stevenson they became friends in the Summer of 1874. Their friendship was a lifelong one. They were so close that Stevenson used his friend to create the character Long John Silver in his great work Treasure Island. He served also as a mentor to Rudyard Kipling until finally passed in 1903 in his early 50’s

My grandfather looked so much like morgan freeman people would ask for his autograph all the time & would drop laughing when they read it. He was so much like him stern but compassionate and wise, super funny. Rip grandpa

Recently I have watched a number of your presentations & found them amazing. It is like you are speaking directly to me. I attempted to take my own life 6 weeks ago. I was so desperate with severe chronic pain with a degenerative chronic condition. I have had a near death experience so I know God exists & the indescrible beauty of heaven. I am determined to keep strong in my belief for whatever the time God gives me. I am not weathy but find so many people in similar circumstances i can help emotionally. This poem is so true ...Bless You Morgan.. Your messages reach the hearts of so many people of all types of journeys. Thankyou so much. Janelle

This is why we think of Morgan Freeman as not only our elder, but the elder of every Hollywood celebrity.
Not because of his age but his wisdom and his deep spirituality.

Freeman is a product of southern teaching that assisted him speaking well as he talented and required all their students to recite. Magnificent

Morgan Freeman did not just memorize this powerful poem for an actor's role...He is this man and he is to be cherished and admired. He has one of the most recognizable voices that is a treasure. I hope his voice will be with us for a long, long time to come.

Beautiful poem by one of the most gifted orators across generations, backed by the poignant and timeless music from Zach Hemsby…this gives me goosebumps. Even Charlie Rose was speechless.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
