"Opinion is the wilderness between knowledge and ignorance." - Plato

This problem was describe by Plato in the Protagoras; he explains how anyone can be view as a political expert but only a few men are able to take care of horses, make bread and so on. Just the same today.

From someone who was Homeless, I can assure you that even the "Experts" don't know the stages or causes of Homelessness.

The problem with this argument is there are some fields that are frankly not expert fields. There are plenty of states that have followed the advice of "homlessness experts" to have the advice be an absolute disaster.

Expert opinions only work if a) they are actual experts b) it's a field that one can specialise in c) they are actually being honest with absolutely no external influence (politics, money).

The difference is that in science you usually have an immediate check on whether or not the experts are competent.
In social work incompetence seems to be rewarded, which leaves most regular people feeling like they know better.

Ask the social scientists about the reproducibility problems in their research.

It’s the difference between the humanities subjects vs. scientific subjects. One is almost impossible to have a right or wrong answer, and the other has theory’s based on tested methods. It’s so different.

Social "experts" utterly lack authority simply due to context.

I'm a 50 year old white male. By virtually every measure, men like me are worse off than our fathers, who were worse off than our grandfathers. The only exceptions are the very rich and very poor - they're both doing better. But I will never be very rich and I don't want to be very poor.

That amount and length of decline stands as proof of the incorrectness of every social doctrine our intellectuals and politicians are spewing. When they have failed us for 3 generations, nothing they say is trustworthy.

Appealing to authority used to be considered a logical fallacy. To trust a person's opinion you need to trust their knowledge and their credibility. We're regressing back to a time where ideology dictates what is true and questioning it is not allowed.

The homeless example struck a cord with me. As someone who has worked in outreach and is close to people who are/have been homeless (and having couch-surfed myself for a short while) it is unendlessly frustrating trying to explain to people that the "traditional" view of homelessness and substance use as a moral failing or character flaw rather than a human reaction to overwhelming (literally, I mean too much to handle without external help) adversity actually makes the problem worse. When people still insist on talking about homeless camps in a way that sounds more like they're talking about a roach infestation, it makes me question if people actually enjoy seeing people suffer and die for the crime of being dealt a shitty hand in life. But what do I know? I've only dedicated my entire adult life to learning about it.

The reason physicists aren't questioned, is because their science usually works out. And people notice that.
